Tax Reform Gets In the Way of Pence’s Jerusalem Victory Lap

POLITICO quotes USCPR Executive Director Yousef Munayyer in its coverage of Pence’s upcoming trip to Palestine/Israel.

 

The delay could give the vice president an excuse to scrap the Bethlehem leg of the trip entirely. If Pence still makes the trip to the town of Jesus’ birth, tensions could flare.

“If he wants to go to Bethlehem, I mean, somebody’s got to be there with him, right?” said Yousef Munayyer, executive director of the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights. “If he goes with an Israeli escort, it’s going to cause a firestorm. And if he’s there with Palestinian leaders it’s going to cause a firestorm.”

Palestinian leaders are under enormous pressure from their own constituents to shun the vice president on his visit. A recent poll found 91 percent of Palestinians opposing Trump’s Jerusalem move. Underscoring the boiling anger, Abbas said Wednesday that the Palestinians will no longer “accept any role of the United States” in the peace process.
