On December 5, 2017, Trump declared that the US would recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. This move flew in the face of international law, the consensus of the international community, and decades of US foreign policy. Accepting Israel’s illegal annexation of Jerusalem to Israel, most notably occupied East Jerusalem, legitimizes Israel’s illegal actions in the city, including its ongoing displacement and disenfranchisement of the city’s Palestinian residents.

On June 5, 2017 the Senate voted 90-0 on a resolution (S.Res.176) supporting the 50th anniversary of what it terms Israel’s “reunification of Jerusalem.” The resolution incorrectly claims Palestinians enjoy freedom of worship in the city, omits mention of Israel’s violations of international law in Jerusalem and its discrimination against Palestinian residents, and calls on the president to move the US embassy there. There is a similar resolution in the House (H.Res.328).
