Tell Your Members of Congress to #SkipTheSpeech during Presidents’ Day Recess

Amazing—so far at least 18 Members of Congress have publicly committed to #SkipTheSpeech of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu!

Together with Roots Action, Jewish Voice for Peace, Code Pink and American Muslims for Palestine, we’ve generated more than 100,000 letters to Congress. Our online activism is having a huge impact.

Now it’s time to take our online activism into the real world, especially to thank those Members of Congress who have already pledged to #SkipTheSpeech.

Congress will be on its President’s Day recess from Valentine’s Day, Saturday, Feb. 14-Feb. 22. This is the perfect time for you to tell your Members of Congress in person that you want them to #SkipTheSpeech. Here’s how:

Assemble a delegation of like-minded constituents and schedule an in-district meeting with your Representative and Senators. Let me know if you’ll take this on and I’ll help you with scheduling, talking points and petition signatures for you to deliver.

Check to see if your Representative and Senators are holding town hall meetings next week. If so, assemble a group of people to attend and ask your Members of Congress to #SkipTheSpeech. Let me know if you’re able to do this and I’ll help you with a bird-dogging how-to guide, talking points, and petition signatures for you to deliver.

We’ve already heard from many of you that you’ve already called your Members of Congress to ask them to #SkipTheSpeech. Thank you! If they’ve told you that they aren’t attending, please let us know so that we can add them to our expanding list.

And mark your calendars—next Wednesday, February 18, we’ll be doing a coordinated national call-in day to flood Congress with opposition to Netanyahu’s speech.

Why should you convince your Members of Congress to #SkipTheSpeech? Here are two reasons: Netanyahu’s speech is designed to undercut President Obama’s diplomacy with Iran over its nuclear program and the Israeli Prime Minister will use the forum to justify Israel’s ongoing colonization of Palestinian land and oppression of the Palestinian people. For additional reasons, see our talking points here for your use at meetings and town halls.

If Netanyahu insists on proceeding with this speech, wouldn’t it be great to have him do so with a half-empty chamber?

Thanks for taking action to help make this happen!

Sincerely,

Mike Coogan

P.S. Here’s the semi-official “whip list” maintained by The Hill with the Members of Congress who are skipping the speech. If yours are, it’s still important to meet with them and attend their town halls to thank them.

P.P.S. Just in case you haven’t yet, you can still send letters to your Members of Congress or for non-U.S. residents sign a petition.
